From October 28th to November 4th, 2023, the foundation's commitment to accessible eye care materialized into an event for the Wamba community. Our committed team did this together with our partners of LIONS SightFirst Eye Hospital (LSEH).
Eye Health: A Global Challenge and Local Solution
Globally, millions lack access to basic eye care, a challenge that the Health Yetu Foundation tackles head-on. Our surgical camp catered to 940 individuals, offering comprehensive eye health services. This aligns with the foundation’s vision to bridge the gap in eye care accessibility.
Cataract: A Barrier to Vision and the Role of Non-Profit Organizations
Within the eye care domain, cataracts remain a leading cause of visual impairment. The camp's focus on cataract treatment saw 187 patients with cataracts, with 134 successful surgeries restoring sight, thanks to the non-profit's expertise and dedication.
Early Detection and Intervention: Safeguarding Vision
The detection of 42 cases of early cataract demonstrates the camp's role in preventive eye care. Early intervention is crucial in eye health management, and these efforts underscore the foundation's proactive approach to community eye care.
Combating Prevalent Eye Conditions
The camp addressed a spectrum of eye conditions, from the 156 cases of allergic conjunctivitis to the 80 instances of glaucoma diagnosis. These numbers highlight the essential work non-profit organizations perform in offering specialized eye care, often unavailable in such communities.
Presbyopia and Dry Eye Syndrome: Addressing the Full Scope of Eye Health
With 260 diagnosed cases of presbyopia and a striking 545 instances of dry eye syndrome, the camp's services extended beyond surgical interventions. Providing corrective glasses and treatment for dry eye syndrome, the Health Yetu Foundation enhanced the daily lives of hundreds, furthering its mission as a non-profit organization.
Advanced Eye Care Procedures
Even rare conditions such as tarsal plate rotation and strabismus were not beyond the camp's capability. With advanced eye care procedures, the foundation ensured comprehensive service delivery, from basic refraction tests for glasses to complex surgeries.
