Dental Training Week - Nairobi

Strengthening Dental Care Capacity in Northern Kenya

In preparation for the upcoming dental outreach camp in South Horr this June, Health Yetu Foundation organized a dental training week in Nairobi for two nurses from Northern Kenya. During the training, the nurses learned how to recognize common dental problems such as cavities, infections, gum disease, pain complaints, and other early warning signs that may require further treatment. They were also trained in providing basic oral health education, including toothbrushing instructions, prevention advice, and guidance that can be shared with children and families in schools and local communities.

Because the nurses are rooted in the communities they serve, they play an essential role in making oral health education understandable, trusted, and accessible. A key goal of the training was to strengthen local capacity beyond the dental camp itself. After the outreach in South Horr, the nurses will serve as local contact persons for patients who may have questions, concerns, or post-treatment complaints. This creates a direct and reliable link between the community and the dental team, ensuring that patients continue to receive guidance and support after the camp has ended.

By investing in local knowledge and follow-up care, Health Yetu Foundation aims to make dental outreach more sustainable, accessible, and impactful for underserved communities in Northern Kenya.
